Alternative Support Groups

SMART Recovery® offers free
scientifically based mutual help groups (including groups online)
for abstaining from any addictive behavior. SMART Recovery®:
- Teaches self-reliance
rather than reliance on a higher power
- Views addiction
as a complex maladaptive behavior rather than as a disease
- Encourages
you to recover and move on with your life
- Does not use
the labels "alcoholic" or "addict"
- Does not have
"sponsors"
- Holds meetings
which are actual discussions rather than a series of monologues
- Advocates the
appropriate use of prescribed medications and psychological treatments
- Evolves as
scientific knowledge evolves
Dr. Horvath has been President
of SMART Recovery® since 1995. His quarterly President's Columns in
the SMART Recovery® newsletter are available at this website.
The differences
between SMART Recovery® and Practical Recovery Services are that SMART
Recovery® is a non-profit organization which supports abstinence by providing
volunteer guided free support groups. PRS is a for profit business
which supports abstinence, moderation or harm reduction through professional
services.
