Meet Dr. Wilson

We have preserved the writing on this page, originally from Dr. Wilson’s website: non12step.com. Practical Recovery absorbed some of the content from Dr. Wilson’s website upon Dr. Wilson’s retirement. To allow readers a clear view into Dr. Wilson’s thinking behind the content in this section, we have brought in the content from his “About Me” page and included it below.

Like many of you, I found myself sinking into self-medication with alcohol following devastating personal tragedies. That was over 40 years ago and it took me 3 years to extract myself from my drinking habits and adjust to the events that had precipitated it. Note I say adjust, not resolve – some of the events remain unresolved, but my coping skills are no longer limited to vodka.

However, the key here isn’t the origin of my problem – or yours – but leaving that problem behind. There was no real help available – just the life-destroying AA “Steps” – so it took me 3 years to figure it out. No one should have to waste 3 years, or more, overcoming a destructive habit. 3 months? Okay. But not 3 or more years in contemplation hell attempting to decide if, when and how to “kick the habit” as ex-smokers say, with cigarettes being a far tougher adversary than alcohol.

For over 30 years now I have been providing effective, short-term, individual, outcome-based services to individuals and couples. These services are based on research and experience with over 1,000 clients from all walks of life and from around the world.
